Christianity, Judaism & Others - christ: suffering

# i would appreciate if any christian (or non-christian) can help me understand this!

# i ve come across many christians who say that christ "suffered" for the sake of humankind, that they may therewith have the life eternal! and this very word "suffer" is what i cannot grasp, despite (what i believe are) sincere attempts at it!

## christ is believed to be the god in (human) flesh...and this is where the difficulty, with respect to christ's suffering, stems from! god is perhaps immune to pain...to suffering: i think christian friends will agree to this; god cannot be hurt or caused to suffer!

### so when god became christ (god in flesh), did he retain his quality of being immune to pain?

if not, then the god in flesh (not immune to pain) had a different essence, and not just manifestation, from the god in heavens (immune to pain)!

if did, then i dont see how christ could have "suffered", given that he retained his heavenly quality of being immune to pain! all the while he was being persecuted, he would have felt no pain! i dont want to recount the cruelties hurled upon the man christ...but whilst they thut they were causing him pain...the reality would have been that he was feeling none of it! and when christ was immune to pain, and thus would have felt naught even till the time he gave up the spirit, i dont see how he cud have "suffered"!

# i hope i have made myself understandable...i ll try to add as and when there are responses!

## if anybody feels god need not be immune to pain, sure, lemme hear from u; only it should be relevant to the bible!

May be I can help by asking a counter question:

Q. Is it possible for some one to remove suffering if he not suffered himself?

A. We know that God does not suffer.

So how can he remove suffering if he himself has not suffered?

This may sound like blasphemy. But please forgive. Because I suppose this is the way Christians may see it.

My answer would be that God need not suffer in order to know what suffering is.

May be suffering is not real.

It exists only in our minds.

This must be so, because if pain can be relieved by taking a medicine, or a drug, or a chemical, then it surely is in the mind only.

## right....so did jesus "suffer" from hurt to his body?

the christian friends i talk to say "yes"! so, if he did feel pain, and god does not feel pain, then his essence, and not just manifestation, was distinct from the heavenly father....am i correct or have i misstated it?

# only suffering? how about enjoyment or happiness? or well-being? maybe they arnt real either?

...maybe v are all not real! (-:

# i am not sure i got that....

...are u talking about the brain picking up, and responding to, stimuli?

...or about pain being a learned perception?

...or that pain is an illusion?

I am as bewildered as you are.

I would like to ask the Christians if Christ took all suffering upon himself why does suffering continue to exist in this world?

We are told that there would be no suffering in the next world.

That is like beating a kid and then telling him Ok I will not beat you tomorrow.
